The Mesa was laid out in the 1920s by Los Angeles businessman Edmond Fulford as one of Palm Springs' first gated communities, entered through a single stone gateway at El Portal and South Palm Canyon Drive that still stands today. Tucked into a small canyon at the base of Mount San Jacinto, its roughly 180 homes span an unusually wide range of eras and styles: 1920s Spanish Colonial and adobe estates, 1950s ranch houses, and later midcentury and contemporary construction. The neighborhood has long drawn Hollywood names, including Sonny Bono, Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, Suzanne Somers, and Barry Manilow. Homes sit on fee-simple land with no HOA, and the Moorten Botanical Garden, a working cactus nursery open to the public, sits right at the neighborhood's entrance.
